Dovecote. Probably late C16 early C17 for Sir John Harington's estate; restored
1982-83. Coursed rubble, of two different colours of lias limestone; Bath
stone quoins and dressings; Cotswold stone slate roof. Square on plan with a
steep, coped gable on each side; moulded string course at eaves level. The
east and south gables have square, chamfered freestone openings. Chamfered
squared headed low doorway on east side. Putlog holes in east gable. 1980's
timber louvred lantern. Interior: finely sawn ashlar nesting boxes with
overhanging string courses. Said to have the largest number of nesting boxes in
Somerset. (J. Edgar and R. Iles, Bristol Archaeological Research Group Review
No. 2, 1981).
