1/59 The Ellesmere
- Public House
- II
Public house. 1860s or 70s. Rock-faced stone (brick rear)
with slate roof. 3 x 4 bays with 2 storeys. High Victorian
Gothic. Projecting plinth, flush head and sill bands and
bracketed eaves below steeply pitched roof. Three 3-light
chamfered stone mullion and sash windows to ground floor.
Panelled door between bays 2 and 3 with fanlight and gable
above which frames the Ellesmere coat of arms. Three 3-light
first floor windows with round-arched sashes, separating
colonnettes and pointed hoodmoulds. The left corner is canted
on the ground floor with a shouldered-arch door below a
polygonal first floor oriel window which suitably articulates
the turn into Brindley Street. The Brindley Street elevation
is treated similarly but has a blocked ground floor opening
and two gabled dormer windows with round-arched lights and
ball finials. Interior much altered.
