House, mid C19 Italianate, with central part of front, hall and stair
of 1893, attributed on stylistic grounds to T M Lockwood, in C17
Flemish manner. Grey sandstone ashlar with grey slate roofs.
Symmetrical front; central portion of 3 storeys has canted corners
with 3 windows to front and 1 to each oblique face. Recessed wing of
2 storeys to each side (containing the principal rooms) has a wide
2-storey canted bay window. 3 shaped gables with moulded cornices to
central portion; panelled parapets to wings. Moulded plinth.
Projecting porch has panelled oak door in round-arched opening under
carved frieze and broken curved pediment (containing cartouche) on
composite pilasters. A round-arched leaded window in each side of
porch. Sashes (with leading or bars removed) to 2 lower storeys left
of porch; cross-casement (leading or bars removed) to upper storey.
Unequal sashes (probably with leading or bars removed) in bay windows
of wings. Moulded bands at 1st and 2nd floors. Ornate datestone in
central gable, carved panels in side gables. Between the front gables
and the Italianate rear wing is a transverse roof with coped gables
and simple finials of C17 character. The rear wing is
undistinguished.
Interior: Great open-well stair of oak with heraldic lions on newels
and individually carved detail on balusters; panelled oak door, oak
fireplace and overmantel and panelled ceiling in hall; dining room
(left) has fine Jacobean panelled plaster ceiling and basket-arched
recess at rear; drawing room (right) has good ornate plaster cornice
and rose and fine carved marble fireplace and mantel, all probably mid
C19.
