2/48 Barn at New Hall Farm
approximately 25 metres
to west of farmhouse.
II
Barn. Probably early C17, later alterations. Partly cruck-framed,
coursed, squared sandstone rubble, stone slate roof partly replaced
in corrugated iron. Single-storey except downhill end bay which has
a loft. 5 bays. Quoins. On farmyard side: full-height cart entrance
to right of centre, jambs rebuilt in C20 brickwork, no doors. Cowhouse
door to far right with a blocked doorway to its left. Walling to left
of cart entrance of cruder rubble work. Left part of roof replaced in
corrugated iron. Rear: cart entrance partly blocked with brickwork,
other altered openings. Interior: to left of entrance a cruck truss
set on padstones has massive blades, tie beam, curved wind-braces and
collar set below ridge. To right a transverse partition wall with,
beyond it, another similar cruck truss. The upper part of a third truss
remains in the downhill end gable. Rear cart entrance framed by heavy
wood posts and lintel. Upper end of building spanned by two king-post
trusses. The building is a rare survival in a region dominated by post
and truss timber-framing. Low range of buildings projecting from front
left not of special interest.
