GV II
Perimeter wall with gateway, chimney stack and attached outbuildings
including stable now under conversion to house. C15, incorporating
later phases of construction and now partly incorporated in outbuildings
remodelled in late C19 or early C20. Rough-ashlar sandstone, stable-
block partly timber-framed with some brick infill and stone slate roof.
Wall around 3 sides of garden and forecourt with gateway in south side
and 2-storey stable built on to west side; chimney stack (to Cranford
Hall) at east end of north wall.
Gateway: a chamfered, depressed, 4-centred arch with hoodmould.
Flanking buttresses bear escutcheons of Bosvile and Cresacre beneath
C17 ball finials. Wall ramps down to each side and continues to right
as low retaining wall with chamfered plinth, offset band and stone
coping. Wall continues to left of gateway (with gap) to join stable-
block.
Stable-block: outer wall exhibits various phases of construction.
Offset band exposed. 2 rectangular loops beneath dripmould now cut
into by C19 3-light mullioned window. Central part of 1st floor brick,
now part-rendered, with, to right an exposed timber wall post and to
left, an external stack on 3 corbels now truncated at eaves. Another
inserted 3-light window to 1st floor left.
North wall: massive offset chimney stack has infilled fireplace opening
with roll-moulded jambs and damaged lintel with raised panel. Triangular-
shaped relieving arch and round-arched hoodmould with decayed heraldic
stops and central boss. Wall continuing to west exhibits fragmentary
remains of a second external stack and has another stack corbelled out
at ground level with to its left a blocked, chamfered 2-light mullioned
window and to right a similar single light.
Interior of stable-block: 1st floor retains 3 jowled wall posts built
into perimeter wall. Wall plate shows peg holes for infill. 3 early
king-post trusses, 2 with short curved braces to cambered tie beams,
the other with straight tie-beam with peg holes for infill and one
remaining chevron strut parallel to principal rafter. Trenched purlins,
straight braces from king-posts to square-set ridge.
