Entrance gateway. Piers mid C17, for Walter Dunch; gates probably C20.Limestone
ashlar and wrought-iron. Piers have moulded bases and cornices surmounted by
stone griffons on coronets holding stone cartouches containing arms. Inner and
outer faces of piers have shell-headed niches. Wrought-iron gates are in C18
style with scroll-work overthrow. The griffons represent the Bisshopp crest and
date from c.1700; the arms are of White impaling Tait and date from
c.1777.(Buildings of England: Oxfordshire, p.716; C. Maltin, Newington House,
1985).
