Manor house. Late C17 and late C18. Coursed limestone rubble and ashlar
dressings; old plain-tile roof with stone and brick stacks. H-plan plus added
rear wings. 2 storeys plus attics. 7-window front, divided 2:3:2, has storey
band and a stone cornice breaking into a small open triangular pediment over the
central window. Central doorway has double-leaf C18 doors, flanking pilasters
and a segmental pediment, and the sash windows (mostly 12-pane) have stone flat
arches. Central range has 2 double-sash dormers with flanking scrolls and
triangular pediments with finials. Similar dormer to hipped right wing but left
wing altered to 3 storeys with plain parapet. Large projecting stone stacks to
return walls, and a Venetian window and hipped dormers to left. Rear is
irregular and complex but has some stone cornices and hipped roofs. Interior:
Large early C17 open-well stair with strapwork balustrade; high quality late C17
marble fireplace with festoons, masks and flanking scrolls; late C17 secondary
stair with heavy turned balusters rising to second floor; elaborate late C18
cornices and doorcases and an inlaid marble fireplace with rustic relief panel
by William Collins.
