GREAT HASELEY THAME ROAD
SP60SW (East side)
5/89 Walls and gates to E, S and W
of the Manor House
GV II
Walls and gates. C17 and C18. Limestone rubble with ashlar piers. Uncoursed
rubble wall runs from outbuilding attached to The Stables (q.v.), on the east,
and returns to the south of the Manor House (q.v.). In the south-east corner is
a pair of plain low gatepiers with ball finials, possibly C17, connected by a
simple C20 iron overthrow with central lantern. The wall returns around the
south-west corner to a tall C18 pier with ball finial. From this point the west
wall breaks back: the southern half being brick lined with a raking brick
coping; the northern half with a flat stone coping. In the central part of the
latter section the wall returns in quadrants to a recessed pair of C18 gatepiers
with bases for stone finials. The northern quadrant contains a side gate. The
main gateway is now built up. The building of the south wall is reputed to have
been demanded by the Church authorities in order to prevent C17 churchgoers from
viewing orgies at the Manor House.
