Description

WOOLPIT GREEN HILL
TL 9762
5/152 Jubilee Village Pump
-
GV II
Village pump. 1897, in commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The
pump is sheltered by a circular structure, open on 4 oak posts with a conical
shingled roof and an enriched spike finial of wrought iron. Each post has
Perpendicular Gothic tracery at the lower level and supports a carved figure
of Queen Victoria at its head. Braces form a shallow elliptical arch between
each post, with spandrels enriched with foliage, and a key-block bearing a
lion's head. The pump is encased in wood, also having tracery carved on 3
sides: on the 4th is an inscription above the spout. Around a frieze at the
head is a motto.
