House, latterly a public house (closed 1966). C15 core, extended to right in
C17 in 2 phases. C19 re-roofing. Timber framed and plastered, lined in
imitation of ashlar. Shallow-pitched pantiled roof. 3 cells. 2 storeys.
Upper floor has 3 C18 square-leaded casement windows. On ground floor, 2 old
4-light casements and a mid C20 window to left. Mid C20 louvred shutters.
Cross-entry doorway has eared architrave and 6-panel raised and fielded door.
Stack has plain shaft of narrow brick. Attached to left gable end is a C19
one-storey addition: whitewashed brick and glazed black pantiles; one inset
sash window with glazing bars. Behind is a one-storey weatherboarded and
pantiled wing, part with a cellar. Interior. C15 work comprises former open
hall and associated service end. In the hall, a little exposed studding and a
sooted front wallplate c.1.5m below present eaves; rear main post has blocked
mortice for brace to former open truss. Service partition retains one doorway
with 4-centre arched head. At service end, substantial curved braces (partly
concealed) and evidence for original windows; some heavy square joists.
Inserted floor has chamfered main beam, the joists plastered over. In hall
chamber, some studding set against the stack may be the remains of a timber
chimney. C17 parlour cell has regular studding and 2 sizes of plain floor
joists, the later phase extending the earlier floorbeam by means of a scarf
joint. Intact open fireplace on ground floor.
