TM 16 SE GREEN
1/135 Green Farmhouse
- II
Former farmhouse, late C16 and c.1600. 3-cell plan with two original rear
wings. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof;
an axial chimney of red brick; the sawtooth shaft rebuilt c.1900; a gable
chimney to right. Mid C19 sashes with large panes; and in the parlour and
hall cells with sidelights. Mid C19 entrance door with 4 panels, the upper
panels glazed; a dentilled and modillioned pediment above. Some good original
internal features: very closely-spaced windbraced close-studding, the original
brick-nogging being visible at attic level. High quality butt purlin roof
with, unusually, 3 tiers of purlins (the uppermost tier windbraced). In a
rear wing is a newel staircase with turned balusters at the head; a dog-gate
with 2 tiers of closely-spaced turned balusters at 1st storey is probably from
this stair. Above the hall are heavy joists with unusual chamfer and cavetto-
mouldings combined. Large open fireplace in the hall. Small blocked windows
with roll and cavetto mullions, and larger C17 windows also blocked, with
transomes. Much repositioned C17 wainsctotting and several moulded plank
doors.
