MICKFIELD
DEBENHAM ROAD
Brook Farmhouse

II

Former farmhouse, mid C16 and early C17. Originally of 3-cell plan with
cross-passage entrance; the plan was reversed, and a parlour block added in
early C17 with lobby entrance. 2 storeys, the parlour block with an attic.
Timber-framed and roughcast. Thatched roof with axial C17 chimney of red
brick. Late C19 or early C20 sashes with small panes. C20 gabled plaintiled
entrance porch with boarded door. The C16 house has a queen-post roof, hipped
at both ends formerly; the posts are jowled and support purlins of triangular
section, with slender arch-braces. Good wind-braced studwork, and blocked
diamond-mullioned windows. A blocked 4-centred arched doorway at the former
cross-entry. In C17, the remodelling included total replacement of the 1st
floor, with chamfered joists; a large chimney with newel stair was placed in
the former service cell, and the parlour cross-wing was added. This has a
bridging joist with double-ogee moulding in the parlour.
