GV II

Hydraulic engine house and tower. 1880-85. Red brick with
ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled slate roofs. Chamfered
ashlar plinth and rusticated quoins, moulded eaves band. South
front, to left, has a single bay block with a tall
round-headed window and a hipped roof with ventilator lantern.
To left, a further block, 3 windows, with a large central
round-headed doorway flanked by single tall round-headed
windows, and and a pyramidal roof with a ventilator lantern.
Beyond, a wide block, 3 windows, with an off-centre
round-headed doorway flanked by single tall round-headed
windows. Beyond again, a single bay block with a large
round-headed doorway with double plank doors and hipped roof
with ventilator lantern. At the north-west corner, a 4 storey
tower with rusticated quoins. The west front has 2 single
round-headed windows, and above a moulded cornice, a blind
attic storey topped with a pyramidal roof. Below, a large
round-headed doorway. Built to provide hydraulic power for
operating the lock gates to Alexandra Dock.
