Bank, now offices facing Ramsden Square. c1873. For the
Cumberland Union Bank Co (plans register). Ashlar sandstone on
limestone plinth, slate roof.
3 storeys and attic, 4 bays. Moulded plinth;
channel-rusticated ground floor. Entrance to bay 1 has
panelled double doors under ashlar transom inscribed BANK;
overlight and archivolt with carved keystone; fluted pilasters
with bayleaf swags; winged-lion brackets to modillioned
cornice surmounted by balustraded balcony with panelled corner
dies and fluted ball finials. Other bays have limestone sill
band to recessed round-arched sashes with carved keystones;
modillioned cornice.
1st floor: balcony door and plain sashes with moulded sill
band and Ionic aedicules having plain friezes and dentilled
cornices. Continuous, dentilled cornice breaks forward over
each bay to form sills of windows above.
2nd floor: sashes flanked by fluted pilasters beneath
entablature with groups of 3 corbels at the bay divisions.
Ashlar parapet broken by square-headed dormers with cornices
on brackets and raised segmental pediments. Mansard roof with
ornate end stacks having offsets, panelled sides, string
courses and cornices on corbel tables.
INTERIOR: banking hall with oak dado-panelling and 9-panel
doors; ceiling in 3 panels with Greek key, rosette and
guilloche ornament. Main staircase to rear left has turned
balusters and wreathed handrail. Forms part of planned scheme
around Ramsden Square, the focal point of Barrow in Furness
town centre.
