A Grade II Listed Building in Malton, North Yorkshire

Former Malton Museum, Market Place

Uploader's Comments

Malton Museum opened in 1931 in the Assembly Rooms at the Milton Rooms in Market Place on a 999-year lease. When Ryedale District Council was created in 1974 the authority decided it needed larger premises, which left its old home, the Town Hall, empty. The council then moved the museum into the Town Hall in 1982 where it remained ever since, but the Museum had to move out of the building in April 2012. When the council's lease on the building expired. This meant the museum or the council would have to pay a full commercial rate to stay put, which was not viable. The museum has applied for lottery grants to help it find new premises but so far those applications have been unsuccessful.
