Pair of attached houses. c1792. Possibly by William Paty.
Stucco on brick with limestone dressings, party wall stacks
and pantile mansard roof. Double-depth plan. Mid Georgian
style.
Each of 3 storeys, basement and attic; 1-window range.
Pilasters to a frieze and cornice, and parapet; right-hand
entrance to No.52, that to No.54 in the left return; doorways
have pilasters and imposts, consoles to pediments, moulded
semicircular keyed arches, plate-glass fanlights and 6-panel
doors. Cambered heads with 5-stepped voussoirs to 8/8-pane
rectangular sashes, 4/8-panes on the second floor. The left
return has a 1-window range, a semicircular-arched stair
window above the door. INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: wrought-iron front area railings and
gates with urn finials curve up Pennant steps to the
entrances; attached rubble garden wall to rear of No.54 with a
keyed brick segmental-arched doorway; cast-iron street sign on
the right return inscribed SPRING STREET.
Planned as part of a uniform development with Nos 52-84
Kingsdown Parade (qv), and sharing their internal layout.
Developed by James Weekes and Charles Lockier to a design
similar to contemporary ones by William Paty. The plots were
sold to separate builders, and interior details were completed
by the clients.
