Inn, now hotel. Early-mid C19 with older origins and C20
alterations and extensions. Stuccoed over stone and brick,
slate roof, brick ridge and end stacks. U-plan.
3-storey, 4-window range. C20 door to right of centre with
entablature hood on console brackets. Carriageway to far left
with pilastered surround bearing thin entablature. Tripartite
windows to ground floor either side of door with 12-pane
sashes of similar size, pilastered outer surround bearing
entablature, plain sill with brackets either end. Similar
windows to 1st floor above and 12-pane sash above carriageway
with similar surround. 16-pane sashes to 2nd floor with
moulded surrounds and plain sills with brackets either end.
Plinth and 2nd floor storey band interrupted by cornices of a
1st floor window surrounds. Deep bracketed eaves.
Inside right wall within carriageway is of coursed squared
limestone. 2-storey and attic wing to rear right, pebbledashed
with dentilled brick eaves and plain-tile roof with 3 hipped
roof dormer windows. 2-storey wing to left inside carriageway,
of red brick in Flemish bond with plain-tile roof. Ground
floor formerly coach-houses. Pair of 24-pane sashes to 1st
floor with slightly cambered arched heads. Further slightly
lower 2-storey, 1-window extension with similar sash to 1st
floor.
INTERIOR: main range has narrow open-well staircase with
scrolled tread end, and ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail.
Formerly the Swan and Castle Hotel and before that, until
1814, known as the White Swan.
