Statue of Dr John Alderson. 1833. Sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott (1775-1856). White marble on a square ashlar base. Standing figure in ceremonial dress holding an open book, on a square base with deeply moulded base and and
moulded top. Front panel inscribed "John Alderson, MD", and
below, "Erected by public subscription AD MDCCCXXXIII".
Originally sited outside the old Royal Infirmary in Prospect
Street, and moved to its present site when the Infirmary was
demolished.
John Alderson (1757-1829) was physician at Hull General Infirmary from 1792 until his death. As well as founding the Sculcoates ‘refuge for the insane’ in 1814 and writing numerous works on medicine and public health Alderson played a leading role in the life of the town. He was president of the Hull Subscription Library and the Literary and Philosophical Society and founder and first president of the Hull Mechanic’s Institute. It is said that between 12 and 15 thousand people attended his funeral.
