G.V. II

House. 1697. Dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys. South front has
single storey gabled porch dated on lintel of moulded doorway. Coping and
kneelers with incised spiral decoration. To left is double chamfered mullioned
window formerly of 4 lights (lacking 2 mullions). Over is 2-light window. 3
symmetrically placed stacks to ridge, coped gables with kneelers. Right hand
return wall has chamfered mullioned and transomed window of 12 lights with
renewed lintel and king mullion. 4-light window over. Window with double
chamfered surround to 1st floor. Rear retains double chamfered mullioned window
of 7 lights with king mullions, with 3-light chamfered window over. Cross
stair-window and to left hand side altered cross window from which John Wesley
is said to have preached. Wesley is recorded first visiting the house 6th May,
1747. William Grimshaw held the first Quarterly meeting here on 18th October,
1748. The barn (q.v.) bears the initials of the owners who were Quakers.
