6/53 3 statues forming War
Memorial in Memorial
Garden, Centre Vale Park

II

War memorial. 3 statues forming a group, 1921 by Gilbert Bayes. 2 small
sculptures are of children in Portland stone one called "THE LAMP OF MEMORY",
the other "THE SHIELD OF HONOUR". The climax of the piece is tall statue of
Portland stone of St. George holding his sword having vanquished the dragon who
has 4 heads,on a globe supported by maidens in Greek dress. This is a good
example of sculpture of the period. The whole stands on a plinth enclosed in a
horse-shoe shaped water basin with tall wall behind bearing date 1914-18 and
1939-45 with inscription set between. To either side, tablets engraved with the
names of the fallen. J. A. Lee, Todmorden and the Great War, (Todmorden 1922)
p.205.
