Old Haggs Farmhouse (formerly listed as Haggs Farm)

Farmhouse. Late C18. Extended and altered early C19. Brick
with plain tile roof. Partial dentillated eaves. 2 ridge and
single gable stacks plus single side wall stack. 2 storeys, 5
unequal bays. Single range. Windows are small paned C19
casements with segmental heads to ground floor, now boarded up.
South front has 2 casements to left, and to their right, door
with gabled hood on brackets. To right again, a casement.
Addition, to right, has casement and door with segmental head.
Above, to left, gabled dormer. To right, 3 casements. Beyond,
to left, single storey stables, late C18, rebuilt late C19, brick
with asbestos sheet roof. Rear has to left, lean-to outshut with
a sash. To right, a smaller outshut with 2 casements. Above, to
right, a casement. Stable has at rear a slatted casement.
Interior has winder and straight stairs plus mid C19 stone
fireplace containing C20 kitchen range. This building is notable
as being the home of Jessie Chambers, whose friend D. H. Lawrence
spent much time there. The building is described in his novel
'Sons and Lovers'.
