Dyehouses. Early C19: 34 and 35 1813-30 and 36 of 1839. Coursed
limestone rubble and ashlar; gabled stone slate roof to Nos 34 and 36,
double Romans to 35. L plan, with 36 to S, 35 to centre and 34 at
right angles to NE. One-storey. 34 has semi-circular arched door to
W gable end and vent to roof. 35 has wide arched openings in end
gables and timber lintels over 6 windows to E elevation. 36 (taller)
has 2 segmental-arched C19 three-light casements to S gable; 3
segmental-arched and 2 timber-linteled windows. Interior: 36 retains
tie-beam corbels; 35 has wide-span collar-truss roof with large
flywheel from 36; 34 has 5-bay mid C19 collar-truss roof with
truncated tie beams - lower collars of composite construction. These
buildings were probably originally used for dyeing, washing and
scouring. Lower sections of walls on all sides of 34 built of finely-
jointed ashlar whereas upper floors of squared and coursed rubble,
suggesting to RCHM an original function such as washing or scouring.
