Tunnel portal. 1793-96 with later repairs. Probably by Josiah Clowes
engineer. Brick and stone. Symmetrical elevation given classical
treatment. Curved brick retaining wall and wings, with brick band and
copings. Single elliptical arch with stone keystone. Above, a large
square stone tablet with console brackets and central, moulded
rectangular shield with chamfered corners, flanked by pilasters. To
left and right of tablet, single round-arched blind windows with stone
keystones and lintels. These are flanked by single, plain brick
pilasters, followed by single flat-arched blind windows with stone
keystones and lintels.
