G.V. II*
Manor House. C15 with later additions and alterations. Partially timber
framed with plastered infill and pebbledash rendering, parts on a sandstone
plinth, plain tiled roofs. Open hall plan with service and solar wings,
extended and converted. 2 storeys; hall of 3 bays, close studded service
wing to left of 4 short bays and solar to right of 2 bays; timber framed
porch in angle between hall and solar, with close studding and curved
brackets, possibly marks the position of a former oriel; to left of service
wing a pebbledash rendered,timber framed, hipped roof extension is probably
C16 or C17; this has a massive projecting brick end stack with re-built
paired shafts and an integral red brick stack in front of the ridge;
C19 casements throughout including tall rectangular window to hall, canted
bay windows to the service and solar wings. To the rear the service wing
is jettied to the first floor at the gable end; close studding, C20 lattice
casements, the openings between the studs in the attic space possibly
marking the positions of original windows. A C19 addition masks the back
wall of the hall and to the left is a tall narrow, timber framed wing
at right angles, added c.1930. The roof, which has been remodelled, is
of trussed rafter construction to the hall and shows signs of smoke blackening;
one arch braced truss to the service wing and curved wind braces, cambered
tie and collar beams to the solar.
