Church of St Helena

A Grade I Listed Building in Thoroton, Nottinghamshire

West niche with angels, Church of St Helena, Thoroton.

Uploader's Comments

Large cusped crocketed ogee headed niche with finial, under a gabled head mould with finial. The head and sides of the niche are each flanked by a pair of mutilated angels. The niche contains an octagonal tripartite pedestal for an (absent) saints statuette. The angels would have been defaced during the Reformation, when sculpture of this kind might be classified as idolatrous, and destroyed by religious zealots. Other image breakers of the time were motivated by churlish loyalty to their lords: their vandalism a political act with a religious excuse. (Photo Aug 2013).
