CHIDDINGSTONE Barn at Hill Hoath Farm

Threshing barn. Dated 1712 on vertical strut on wallplate, but reusing earlier timber
from late medieval structure. Timberframed, clad with weatherboarding, some original
oak, on brick plinth with half-hipped slate roof with weathervane. Right hand side
has modern lean-to with breeze blocks, not of special interest. Right hand side covered
with modern asbestos sheeting. Central midstreys. 5 bays. Angled queen strut roof
with collars in centre of bays, with no ridge piece and continuous side purlins. Wall
frame with diagonal braces. Gunstock jowled posts. Bay 4/5 was originally floored
over. Left hand side has later floor and inserted brick piers. Carpenters' marks.
The post between bays 1 and 2 has a hewn bracket with barge uprising brace to the under
side of the tiebeam which formerly carried a crown post. Some rafters are barked.
