The Lodge and attached gatepiers, gates
and railings

Gate lodge. 1850, with possible earlier origins. Flemish bond brick with limestone ashlar dressings. Stone slate roof, with moulded kneelers to ashlar copings and brick stacks with moulded stone capping. Overall asymmetrical design and plan, in Tudor Gothic Revival style. 2 storeys. Single-bay east elevation has ashlar entrance porch, with Surman family badge above chamfered door surround with label mould; moulded kneelers to moulded coping; studded inner door. Porch is flanked by blank stone loopholes, in the shape of crosses. North elevation has gable facing to left, with two 2-light stone cross window with label mould above square bay window with moulded string to parapet and label mould over similar 1:3:1 fenestration; similar fenestration to bay on right, which has single-light window in gabled dormer above 2-light window. Service bay to right, of one storey, has central doorway with ashlar surround and ashlar coping to parapet. Replacement glazing to south elevation. Interior not inspected.
Subsidiary features: projecting north from NW corner, and returned eastwards along the south front (and enclosing a small garden area) is a stone-coped dwarf wall with spearheaded railings and double gates adjoining NW ashlar gate pier. Attached to the east of the railings are two pairs of rusticated ashlar piers, which flank ornate pedestrian gates and double carriage gates to entrance drive to Swindon Hall (qv).
A fine example of a mid Victorian gate lodge, distinguished by its studied asymmetry and quality detailing, and associated railings and gates.
