LIPHOOK ROAD
No 44 (Rose Cottage)
(Formerly listed as SHOTTERMILL ROAD (North-West Side) Shottermill No 35 (Rose Cottage), previously listed as Nos 35 and 37 (Rose Cottage))
II
Late mediaeval hall house of which two bays remain; and a taller addition of circa 1600 with a cruciform chimney at the end adjoining the older part. Left (older) part of two storeys, two windows; right part only one wide bay. Timber framed (some visible at rear) with tile hung first floor, brick ground floor in diapered rat-trap bond. Steeply-pitched tiled roofs, that at left with long hip. Small C18 and C19 casements. Right rear wing probably C18 of small rubble stonework with red brick quoins and dressings.
Inside much exposed timber. South bay appears always to have had two floors; and there is evidence of the insertion of a smoke bay in the open hall which was then floored over. The smoke bay was probably removed on the building of the new wing with chimney. Four fire-places, the upper ones with Tudor arched beams. Some wall painting of about 1600 on end hall wall.
