Assembly rooms. 1863. By HH Collins. Partly burnt out 1870 and
became the masonic lodge under patronage of HRH Prince of
Wales. Gault brick. Slate roofs. 2 storeys. Hipped block with
5 blind arched windows. Stacks on north and south slopes. Set
in front is an arcade of 5 bays on Tuscan order columns, the
outer bays filled in 1930s to provide storage rooms. Right and
left are single-storey extensions each with a canted window
bay facing east. Triple arcade on square piers to north return
leads to main doorway.
INTERIOR: main room occupies entire central block and rises
through both storeys. 5 by 3 bays. Tuscan order pilasters with
egg-and-dart decoration to capitals rise to an entablature
with a plain frieze. Above the cornice are blind semicircular
arches corresponding to the blind windows. Curved brackets
rise from the cornice to the panelled plaster ceiling which
has fleur-de-lys roses and short pendants. Balcony runs along
west side with a cast-iron balustrade.
