Bendigo monument in St Mary's Rest

Funeral monument in former cemetery. Dated 1880, to William
Abednigo Thompson. White marble. Prostrate figure of a lion on
a rock-faced base, holding an inscribed scroll in one paw.
Rectangular pedestal with inscription and moulded plinth.
William Thompson, c1816-1880, was born locally, and fought as
a professional boxer under the name Bendigo, becoming a local
celebrity. In later life, he became a preacher.
