Library. c1904. Donated by Andrew Carnegie. Coursed, squared
limestone rubble, limestone dressings, with slate hipped roof.
Single-depth plan with rear wing. Eclectic Tudor and Jacobean
Revival style.
Single storey; 2-window range. Divided by octagonal panelled
pilasters to onion finials, with a plinth, cornice and parapet
with curved sunken cusped panels. A narrow right-hand bay,
with the entrance to the left flanked by buttresses on foliate
carved corbels and raised finials, to a round-arched entrance
with raised voussoirs, foliate carved spandrels, and recessed
2-leaf door; a panel above with PUBLIC LIBRARY in raised
letters, and a cartouche in the gable with Wiltshire coat of
arms, and winged cupid. 3-light stone-mullioned and transomed
ovolo-moulded cross windows with 9-pane top windows. Crested
ridge with end finials. Rear 5-bay range has lunettes.
INTERIOR: details include an arch-braced truss roof.
