Description

SHREWSBURY

SJ4812SE SWAN HILL
653-1/14/635 (North West side)
10/01/53 The Old Porch House

GV II*

House. Dated 1628 but probably somewhat earlier. Timber-framed
with plain tiled roof. 2 storeys, 3-window range. Framed in
close studding with middle rail to ground floor with some
tension bracing, small, irregular square panels above. Central
full-height gabled porch projects, with heavy carved brackets
to doorway. Dated on tie-beam above, but almost certainly an
addition to an earlier structure - it cuts the framing of the
wall behind. 2- and 3-light leaded mullioned and transomed
windows on each floor, the upper windows in slightly
projecting cases. 12-pane sash windows in gable end. Long rear
wing possibly a C18 addition. Rear wall stack to right.
