GRANGE-OVER-SANDS

Lodge at entrance to Holme Island. Mid to late C19. Snecked
limestone with red sandstone dressings, with hipped slate roof
behind embattled parapet, and with lead pyramid roof to
turret. Single storey. A turret of square plan projects at the
north-west corner and contains the entrance porch. The string
course below the main parapet continues around the tower.
Above, between the string course and the embattled parapet of
the turret, the north and west walls each have 2 false
balistrariae. The windows are rebated and chamfered. The west
wall of the tower contains 2 of one light. To the right there
is a canted bay window (with 2 mullions removed from its front
opening), with a cross window to its right. The north wall has
2 windows of one light to the left of the turret, and a
3-light window with transom set back further left. The doorway
in the north wall of the turret is moulded, with a 4-centred
arch. The chimney is at the apex of the roof.
