St Joseph's Lodge and gateway
GV II
Lodge and gateway. Early C20 extended 1980s. Red brick,
stretcher bond, old tiled roofs with Dutch gables with stone
copings. Brick chimneystack with 4 low octagonal shafted
moulded brick flues. Jacobean style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Front elevation has first floor 3-light
window with moulded brick mullions, iron casements with
lattice leaded glazing, splayed brick sill, and moulded brick
dripmould. Dutch gable with stone kneelers, moulded copings
and ball finial on pedestal, moulded band at first-floor
level. Ground floor with projecting semicircular bay, with 5
lattice glazed lights, corbelled cornice and parapet with
brick balusters and inner moulded lozenges.
North flank elevation with projecting Dutch gable, lean-to
porch, south elevation with Dutch-gabled dormer, and 3- and
2-light windows.
Building extended eastwards by 1 bay in 1980s, with original
Dutch gable reset.
Gateway has substantial red brick, Flemish bond piers, with
stone caps and ball finials, and elaborate scrollwork
wrought-iron gates.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Building forms an important part of the setting of St Mary's
Church (qv) and Churchyard.
