Two cottages, now single dwelling. Late C17/early C18 with
early C19 left wing. Limestone rubble with painted ashlar
facade, triple-Roman tile gambrel roof hipped and truncated to
the rear, stone stacks with brick shafts to left of main
block, similar tiles to pitched roofs of wings.
PLAN: each cottage was single-unit plan, that to the left was
stepped back, infilled to street level early C19.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic to the main block (right),
single storey C19 block. Each block is one-window range.
A cornice and parapet mask the hipped front to the right-hand
block forming an apparent 2nd floor; platbands between floors.
Stone mullions with cyma mouldings to a 2-light window to the
2nd floor and similar 3-light windows below. A blocked door to
the right has a roll-edged architrave with a moulded hood on
brackets. An early C19 3-light window to the left wing has
roll-moulded mullions to the outside, chamfered on the inside.
C19 glazing of 3 fixed panes and one 2-pane casement to each
except that to the left of the door which has small panes and
a 4/4-pane sash to the centre. The C20 entrance door is in the
left return which has been clad with C20 stretched-bond brick.
The rear wall has been reconstructed with C20 windows and
door.
INTERIOR: the front room in the C19 block, now the entrance
hall, has a C19 open fire with a segmental brick arch to the
party wall. The room to the rear has a cross-beam with
mortices for a floor lower than the present one. An open
fireplace against the party wall with early C18 moulded and
stopped jambs run-out at the corners of the lintel; the centre
of the lintel is of brick similar to that of the C19 front
room. The room to the front right has a painted C19 fireplace
with ornate consoles. The room above has an axial beam,
exposed rafters and a C18 moulded surround to a stone
fireplace. The 3-bay roof has exposed butt purlins and rough
rafters, the roof-space above the eaves has timber-framing to
the rear wall. The room to the rear 1st floor has a cross beam
and an unusual C19 cast-iron fireplace, probably French.
