GV II

House. Early C18. Limestone rubble painted to the front, with
freestone architraves and plinth; plain tile roof with brick
stack to rear left slope of gable end. Double-depth plan with
early C19 rear wing.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; one-window range. Cyma-moulded
stone-mullioned 3-light window with a central 2-pane casement
to the 1st floor; chamfered stone mullions and hoodmould
without labels to a 3-light window with a central C19 sash, to
the ground-floor left. Roll-edge moulding to a wide planked
door to the right.
To rear, the early C19 rear wing has a platband, roll-moulding
to 2-light plate-glass sash windows, 6/1-panes to the ground
floor with a 6-panel door to the left. The roof is continuous
with that of No.21 (qv) to the right.
INTERIOR: the front room has a chamfered axial beam with
run-out stops meeting a large chimney-breast to a former open
fire, an early C18 semicircular recess with shaped shelves in
the rear wall and panelled shutters, soffit and surround to
the window. To the left of the fire, in a rear lobby, is an
early C19 staircase with stick balusters, cupboard stairs at
attic level. The room to the ground-floor rear has an axial
beam, a painted stone surround with a moulded mantelshelf to a
former open fire and a recess to a former mullioned window to
the rear, now covered by the C19 rear wing.
The 1st floor front room has some exposed timber studding to
the rear wall, some lath-and-plaster walls and wide floor
boards. To the right of the blocked chimney-breast is a C18
cupboard with panelled double doors.
The attic, probably 3-bay, has chamfered butt purlins. The
entrance to a cellar with stone steps is now blocked. The
front door has a C18 lock.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached to the rear, north-east corner,
is a Flemish-bond brick boundary wall approx 4m high and 4m
long.
