II
House. Initialled and dated "IE 1636". Thin coursed rubble, dressed
quoins, Burlington (Cumbria) brown-slate roof. 2 storeys. 3-cell,
direct-entry, linear plan with single-storey rear aisle or outshut to
2 cells containing dairy and service-room. Ground floor has 3 windows,
those to housebody and parlour are double-chamfered mullioned, those
to service-end, and to 1st floor are double-chamfered with almost square
reveals. 1st cell (service-end) has 4-light window, inserted doorway
with tie-stone jambs (blocked). 2nd cell has doorway forming direct-
entry to housebody, with composite jambs, Tudor-arched lintel bearing
date inscription and chamfered surround; 4-light window with hoodmould
with straight returns. 3rd cell has 4-light window with hoodmould.
All lack 2 mullions. 1st floor has 4 windows, 3 formerly of 3 lights
now with lowered sills and new central mullion forming 2 lights. 3rd
cell (parlour chamber) has 4-light window altered to 2 lights. Coped
gables with kneelers. Stack to left gable and one other at junction
of 2nd and 3rd cells. Rear has C19 doorway with monolithic jambs to
left of 2-light window lacking mullion.
Interior : All ground-floor rooms have stop-chamfered spine beams.
Those to housebody have scarf joints, evidence of former bressumer.
Aisle has tie-beam and principal rafter.
