4/181 Hall and front area wall adjoining
the Old Post Office to north west
GV II
Outbuilding, possibly associated with the Old Post Office (qv), converted into public
hall and front area wall. Circa early C19, remodelled in mid C20. Slate stone
rubble. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Stone rubble rear lateral stack.
The building which is of rectangular plan is attached to the lower right hand gable
end of the Old Post Office. Late C19 photographs suggest that it was probably a
shippon with a doorway to the left and a window to the right. By 1908 the shippon
door had been blocked and a window inserted. In circa mid C20 the outbuilding was
remodelled and partly rebuilt with an entrance inserted to left of centre. The
fireplace in the rear wall is heated by a rear lateral stack.
Single storey. Asymmetrical 4-window front with C20 gabled stone rubble porch lit by
1-light casement to left of centre. One C20 2-light casement to left and 3 similar
windows to right.
Interior not inspected.
Garden wall to front. Circa early C20. Slate stone rubble in herringbone
construction.
This building and its front area wall are situated by and contribute to the setting
of The Old Post Office qv, one of Cornwall's best known historic buildings. It is
therefore situated in a particularly sensitive area.
