4/184 Gatehouse, garden walls to south
west and north and mounting block
17.12.62 on west, Tintagel Vicarage
(previously listed as Gatehouse at
Vicarage)
GV II
Gatehouse, garden walls and mounting block. Circa C15. Slate-stone rubble and
greenstone rubble. Rag slate roof remodelled to form lean-to roof over south west
side on right with gable ends to north side on left.
The gatehouse forms an arched opening giving access from the road to the vicarage
(qv) and dovecote (qv) to rear. A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fonterrault was
converted from the old coach house in 1925 and is situated to the right of the arch.
To the left is a low range of 1-room plan, probably used as a store-room. The garden
wall continues to the left on the north and encloses the garden on the south west to
the right.
The front elevation to the road has a 4-centred arched opening with hollow chamfer
and pyramid stops and C19 plank doors. Series of square openings in garden wall to
front and mounting block to front on right.
The garden front has a 4-centred dressed stone arch to the gate-house with a part
reworked 2-light mullion window and roundel to left and a C19 2-light casement below
a 3-light cusped greenstone arch and casement to right.
Interior of Chapel has a C20 stone altar and simple fittings.
