Traces of C15 and C16 earlier structure, traditionally held to have been a
Benedictine Hospital. Main structure C17, 2 storey and attic, 3 pedimented
dormer casements. Mid C19 shop front and C16 carriageway on left with 4-centre
wood arch with carved spandtrels. Behind the archway are 2 older posts, moulded
and acting as stop chamfers a crudely carved pestle and mortar on one post
and a retort on the other. The main front above the shop is brick with stucco
lined as ashlar, plain tiles. 5 windows at 1st floor, sash, with glazing
bars and flush frames. Interior: entrance hall and front room fully panelled
but converted into a shop. Fine C17 oak stair with triple concave spiral
turned balusters per tread, with carved console step ends. The radial bar
arched fanlight over doorway to stair remains.
Market Place Wine Shop and Nos 25 to 29 (consec) form a group.
