Show room and offices. 1929 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Load bearing Portland
stone ashlar, slate roof. Bold, sparingly detailed and subtly composed
free neo-classicism. 2 storey podium for showroom with 5 floors of offices
above. 3 windows wide. The ground floor is dominated by the off centre,
large, semicircular, unmoulded archway of the showroom deeply pierced in
the facade with pedimented doorway to left with mezzanine window above.
The 2nd floor or rather 2nd mezzanine windows are deeply recessed and
divided by piers which form the pedestal of the 2 storey giant "Delhi"
order above with engaged columns to the central broader bay and antae
flanking, the metal casements recessed and square headed with panelled
aprons to those on 3rd floor. Giant order entablature over 4th floor, 1st
attic storey surmounted by parapet with 3 balustraded panels and 2nd
recessed attic storey, with central emphasis, the whole crowned by full
width pediment.
