Office block. 1912-13 by H.R. Houchin and Frank Smee: Portland stone,
copper dome. Eclectic Baroque for narrow but very prominent frontage
closing Haymarket vista. 5 storeys as: podium ground floor with mezzanine
and 3 main storeys and 2 tier attics under dome. 2 windows wide with one
major bay on Pall Mall alignment and one narrow bay on splay aligned with
Cockspur Street. Rusticated framework to ground and mezzanine with altered
mid C.20 bank frontage. The major bay has deeply recessed bronzed casement
windows in 3 storey tier to upper floors framed by channelled wall face.
Entablature with prominent modillion cornice and parapet. Above rises a
dome with 2 tiers of attic windows in the drum between scrolled voluted
buttresses, enriched cresting-cornice and copper dome surmounted by finial
with openwork globe crowned by weathervane of a ship. Tall corniced
flanking chimney stacks.
