Ruins of a house built circa 1600 for Thomas Cecil, Earl of Exeter, Lorn Burghley's
eldest son. Built of ashlar faced rubble. Remains of central 3 storey block
with 4 square 4-storey angle towers, tile top storeys octagonal with circular
openings in the parapets, the stone ogee roofs have gone. The towers have
tall window openings with moulded architraves and small square over-windows
with cornices and flat volute decorations. Moulded cornices at floor levels.
The towers are at the corners but originally there were projections between
them, one contained the staircase, the hall was in the wing facing north-east
which had a porch and a courtyard entered by a gateway which survives.
