Corner bank and office block. 1922-23 by Curtis Green. Portland
stone, slate roof. Individual and carefully proportioned
classical design. Ground floor and 5 upper storeys arranged in
3 stages. 5 bays wide to Piccadilly. On the ground floor the
3 central bays have high semicircular arched windows lighting
the banking hall with a balcony and a range of windows to a
mezzanine floor. The 2nd stage has the same central 3 bays
marked by semicircular arched recesses enclosing compositions
of windows to 2 storeys. The 3rd stage has a single Ionic order
running through the remaining two storeys, The central 3 bays
again emphasised, here by deep recessing behind the colonnade
to form a galleria surmounted by a high medium pitched roof. The
Albemarle return is shorter but uses much the same compositional
elements.
