735-/17/10008 Gate and railings on north side
of Newington Green
II
Gate and railings, wrought iron. 1715-20, formed entrance to no.42 Newington Green of
roughly the same date and demolished since 1961. Frame to gate with scrolling insets. Gate
with thin "dog bars", lock bar with tendrils, only three intact. Frame and gate spanned by
filigree pediment, ogival in outline, at the centre of which the initial "H" in an armorial
shield. This may refer to Richard Heard, a London butcher who owned much of the area
north of the Green at the close of the C16. Railings in four curving sections to left, along
Green Lanes, and 6 curving sections to Albion Road: uprights square in section, finishing
in plain spear heads; urns to thicken uprights which are braced to rear, one of the urns no
longer extant. Low parapet wall below railings is of late C20 date and specifically excluded.
