House. Dated EA 1656 on shield on bay window, but incorporates at least 2 late
Cl6-C17 builds. C19 bay to right. Coursed ironstone rubble with Uppingham stone
quoins and Ketton stone window dressings. Thatched roof with coped gables, left
gable with small gablet over kneeler. Two ashlar chimneys with moulded neckings,
and cornices, that to left gable early C18 with pulvinated frieze. Two brick
chimneys to right. 2 storeys, long range of 4 bays. 2 left bays have 3-light
Ketton stone windows with ovolo-moulded mullions. Ground floor windows have cyma
recta cornices; those above have casement cornices. Similar 2 and 3-light
windows, also with cyma recta cornices to ground floor right. Right bay raised
early C19 with 4-light metal casement to first floor. Another 2-light metal
casement over central door. Third bay has fine canted 2-storey bay window with
ovolo mullion windows, casement cornices and carved shield. To left of bay is
small 2-light window with chamfered mullion and cornice. Central C20 door in
bonded Ketton stone surround with shaped lintel and keyblock. Thatch is slightly
eyebrowed over upper windows. Left gable has high blocked window with ovolo
mullions and moulded string above. At right end is an early C19 bay of
ironstone ashlar with Welsh slate roof, brick chimney and 3-light metal
casements, the lower with stone lintel and keyblock. Interior: second bay has
very heavy spine beam and fireplace lintel, both deeply chamfered and stopped;
third bay retains heavy spine but otherwise much altered; right bay has
stop-chamfered cross beam, large fireplace with cambered and chamfered lintel,
winder stair and original principal rafters; left bay remodelled late C18, with
arched niche and fireplace with shouldered wooden architrave, cornice and panel
above.
