Park feature, now disused. Probably late C18 for Sir Richard Hill,
second baronet of Hawkstone. Round-headed recess cut into natural
sandstone at east end of ditch, separating upper and lower wards of
Red Castle (q.v.). Interior: retains the bottom ends of 2 bars of
an iron grille and a recess in the stone floor, which formerly housed
a painted stone statue of a lion. Small rock-cut 'window' to back
wall. C.L. (May 9, 1985) p.1245.
