CHRISTCHURCH PARK
Ice House about 200 metres north of Christchurch Mansion
GV
II
Ice house. C18 probably 1735 when Christchurch Park was improved.
Brick. Deep underground circular chamber with domed top. Brick
vaulted anti chamber to entrance on north side, blocked and
approached by C20 concrete steps. There is a swamp at the bottom
of the chamber and the crown of the dome is said to have collapsed.
The ice house is situated in the part (now municipal park) of
Christchurch Mansion (listed grade I) which was built in 1548
after the Augustinian Priory was dissolved in 1536, and partly
rebuilt in 1675 after a fire. The ice house was probably built in
1735 when Claude Fonnereau acquired the estate.
Christchurch Park is included in the Register of Parks and Gardens
of Special Historic Interest at Grade II.
