First World War memorial. 1922-3. By E Adams, adapted later to
include Second World War. Stone over brick core. Memorial is
set on a raised platform and is of rectangular section. Plinth
has a splayed step rising to a short rectangular obelisk with
rolled edges. Base with wreaths to north and south,
commemorative bronze plaque to west and a bronze casting
attached on pedestals to east. The casting is in form of a
bundle of military emblems and artefacts wrapped in a flag;
articles include bandoliers of ammunition, a Mk. II Browning
machine gun, a Vickers gas-operated light machine gun, spears,
mace and other regalia. On top of the bundle are a soldier's
personal effects: uniform, helmet, gas-mask, water bottle,
camouflage webbing, satchel full of Mills bombs. To north-west
is a later stone-faced wall with attached bronze plaques
listing names of fallen. On top of wall is a bronze lamp with
the Eternal Flame.
