HOWE PLANTATION OBELISK, 70 metres north-east of Woodland Grange

Commemorative obelisk. 1794. Erected for Frederick Montague of
Papplewick Hall, to mark the laying out of this woodland
plantation. Sandstone ashlar. Octagonal obelisk standing on an
octagonal pier with moulded base and top. Side front has oval
raised panel inscribed "HOWE PLANTATION June the 1st 1794" with
above the inscription "F" and "M". This is one of a number of
plantations laid out on the Papplewick Estate by Frederick
Montague each named after a prominent naval commander of his day.
